Step 1: get a Zcash wallet
Use a self-custody wallet that supports shielded ZEC, such as Zashi or Ywallet. Zcash addresses come in several types: transparent addresses start with t1 or t3, shielded Sapling addresses with zs, and unified addresses with u1. Unified addresses bundle shielded and transparent receivers in one string.
Most swap protocols and many exchanges pay out to a transparent (t1/t3) address, so note your wallet’s transparent receiving address as well as its shielded one.
Option A: swap crypto you already own into ZEC (no account)
If you hold BTC, ETH, USDT or another supported coin, you can swap it to ZEC without signing up anywhere. On TorrentSwap, pick the coin you are sending and ZEC as the asset you receive, enter your transparent Zcash address and a refund address on the sending network, and send the exact amount to the one-time deposit address.
Every quote names the protocol that executes the swap and shows the ZEC you receive after all fees. Zcash deposits and payouts usually take about 5 to 15 minutes once the sending chain confirms.
- No account, email or ID for the swap itself
- The protocol pays ZEC straight to your own wallet
- The swap is visible on both chains until you shield the ZEC
Option B: buy ZEC with cash on an exchange
To pay with a bank card or transfer, use a regulated exchange that lists ZEC in your country and complete its identity checks. Availability changes by region, so check the exchange’s supported-assets list before you sign up. Withdraw the ZEC to your own wallet rather than leaving it on the exchange.
Step 2: shield your ZEC
ZEC that arrives at a transparent address is as visible as a bitcoin transaction. To get Zcash’s privacy, move it into your wallet’s shielded pool; wallets such as Zashi do this with a single “shield” action. From then on, shielded-to-shielded transfers hide the sender, receiver and amount.
